As I lay in Savasana at the end of yoga class today, the song Sanctuary by Donna De Lory played softly in the background. I heard the word sanctuary quietly repeated in the chorus over and over again and I thought to myself, “This is what I get from yoga: sanctuary. My yoga mat is one place I find sanctuary.
Growing up Catholic, sanctuary meant something else to me: that place at the front of the church that only priests and altar boys were allowed to go. So it has much of my life had religious connotations; not really something that gave me comfort.
These days, though, sanctuary simply means to me a sacred space or what I feel in that space, a place I feel safe, accepted and authentic. A place where self care can begin.
Where is your sanctuary? Maybe it’s in your home or on a bench in your garden. Maybe it’s in your church or in the place you meditate. Perhaps it’s with a certain person. Creating a place where you can feel connected to your heart, your inner-most beliefs, your true self, is the perfect way to rest, reflect and feel rejuvenated.
Australian Songwriter Angie Karan Krezos says this about sanctuary, “Connect with your inner self. A beautiful sanctuary exists within you. A place of total calm. A connection to stillness. A temple of sacredness, peace, beauty, love. Once you are truly at this infinite inner place, your true home, you will be at home anywhere, at anytime, with anyone. A place where INFINITE possibility exists.”
Create your own sacred space and find sanctuary, then put on your fuzzy red socks and let the self care begin.
